Why it matters for Tobi Amusan
Amusan's signing with Plug Sports is a significant move, as the company will handle her off-the-field interests in Africa. This partnership is expected to help Amusan build her brand and increase her presence in the African market.
What comes next?
With this new partnership, Amusan is expected to continue breaking barriers in the track and field athletics world. Her recent performance, where she broke multiple world records, has created plenty of excitement for Nigerians and Africans alike.
Tobi Amusan, born in Nigeria, hails from Ijebu Ode, Ogun state. Her running career began at the age of 15, when she entered and won an inter-house competition in the 100m sprint. Amusan was inspired to take up the sport after defeating a runner who was exercising at the local athletics stadium that day.
Amusan is managed by icon Management Inc. based in Atlanta, GA, USA, and is coached by Lacena Golding-Clarke. She completed her secondary education in Nigeria at Our Lady of Apostles Secondary School in Ijebu-Ode before relocating to the USA for her undergraduate studies at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP).
Her parents, who are teachers, set the tone for her upbringing in Ijebu Ode, where she was raised in a strict scholarly environment. Amusan's existence, as she recalls, revolved around school, sleeping, eating, and reading books.
Some other sports personalities managed by Plug Sports include soccer players Henry Onyekuru, Asisat Oshoala, and Clement Ugah. With Amusan on board, Plug Sports is expected to continue making waves in the African sports scene.
On August 17, 2022, Lanre Vigo shared his thoughts on the signing, saying he was thrilled to announce the signing of world record holder Tobi Amusan to Plug Sports. Vigo added that in the last couple of weeks, Amusan had created plenty of excitement for Nigerians and Africans through her spectacular performance, inspiring young people across the globe to reach for their goals.
Amusan's 12.06 seconds mark, wind-added (+2.5 m/s), was the first in 36 years and the fourth world record set in women's hurdles. This achievement has cemented her position as one of the top athletes in the world, and her partnership with Plug Sports is expected to take her career to new heights.
